Reasoned Writing / A Framework for Scientific Papers

Reasoned Writing and A Framework for Scientific Papers encourage writers to analyze their reasoning to improve their writing.

Writing is difficult... for just about everyone. Scientific writing is particularly difficult for several reasons. First, the style of scientific writing is unfamiliar to most people, which makes writing scientific text itself a challenge. Second, scientific communication often involves many new concepts and terms, which complicates the writing process. Finally, it can be hard to find guidance for how to write scientifically -- at least guidance that is specific and concise enough to be useful within a short timeframe.

Reasoned Writing and A Framework for Scientific Papers, seek to provide brief, practical suggestions about how to write scientific text, in  way that also applies to other forms of communication such as spoken presentations. However, you will notice that many of the suggestions are not about writing itself! The first step towards effective scientific writing is to make sure that our REASONING is organized and strong. Once we have strong reasoning, then if our writing is simple and specific, the resulting text will be clear and compelling.

UPDATE! (2020 Fall) I have also developed a companion module on statistics and research methods. Only a very brief description of module is included on this website... please contact me for more information.

Please contact me (djindrich@csusm.edu) if you would like source documents of the modules. I am willing to share most everything I do with people who are at institutions that respect diversity and fairness, and don't discriminate against students (or job applicants) based on religion (including non-religion) or other characteristics. Examples of my courses that use the RW/AFSP materials are:

KINE 301: MOTOR CONTROL AND LEARNING

KINE 303: STATISTICS AND RESEARCH METHODS

KINE 425: BIOMECHANICS

The courses are designed for Kinesiology undergraduates at CSU San Marcos, but could be modified to be used in other disciplines.
